The pie charts give a breakdown of the percentages for the primary reasons that people have left and come to the UK in 2007. The most striking feature at first glance is that the main factor influencing this decision is employment.

To begin, having definite employment accounted for 30% of immigration to the UK and emigration for the same reason stood at a similar percentage of 29%. Over a fifth of emigrants left the UK looking for a job, but the figure for immigrants was slightly lower at 12%.

We can see that over a quarter of people left the UK for formal study, whereas the emigrants from the UK for the same purpose were a small minority at a significantly lower percentage of only 4%. Accompanying or joining a family member seemed a slightly less popular reason for both immigrating and emigrating, standing at similar percentages of 15% and 13% respectively. Whereas a large sum of people (32%) gave no reason for leaving the UK or simply had ‘other’ reasons, that sum stood significantly lower of immigrants at only 17%.
