A company has announced that it wishes to build a large factory near your community.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this new influence on your community. Do you support or oppose the factory? Explain your position.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
The announcement by a company to build its large factory near my community, in my opinion, should be viewed positively. A common result of large factories being built around small communities is a disruption in the daily activities of the people belonging to the community. This could mean a potential change in lifestyle such as eating or clothing habits, change in the way the people think, and even introductions of new concepts which threaten the existence of the old ways adhered to by the community. Looking forward, building a large factory near my community, has a range of implications for it.
On the positive side, this could mean increased employment for the people in my community, since the newly built factory would require additional workers to operate the factory’s day to day activities. A consequent effect of establishing the factory would be, the setting up of other businesses which complement the resource or other service needs of the factory, hence increasing employment further. Over time, further flourishing the community, as better facilities and businesses begin to move into the area. The government may take notice of this commercial movement and may decide to dedicate some of its funds towards the development of living standards in my community. Looking prospectively, education standards attainable by children may gradually improve as more parents are able to seek employment and hence afford better quality education.
However, the establishment of the factory does have negative implications for the community. Setting up the factory near the community could mean the introduction of unwanted pollution in the form of air, noise and water pollution. Increased traffic is but another side. Overall, the natural, quiet and scenic features of my community may be disrupted, leading to a loss of natural beauty. Due to a low number of competing businesses within the community, the company operating the factory may decide to exploit this opportunity and pay workers low wage rates, which may negate the anticipated benefits derived from its establishment.
All in all, I support the establishment of the large factory by the company, since it is my belief that with proper government or community regulation of the factory, the community can benefit far more than it could lose in this circumstance.
