QUESTION: Life has become much more stressful compared to our parent’s generation. As a result, stress related illnesses are increasing around the world. Why is stress such a problem in the modern world and what do you think can be done to overcome the problems caused by stress?
 
In such a competitive fast-paced generation, stress is taking a toll on people and expanding its crawl from just the adult issue to the youngsters. Stress has been proven to be the cause to the well-being of life and an acute issue in society.
Stress within one’s comfort zone is an unavoidable bodily response to challenging situations. However an overwhelming emotional tension can result in a detrimental effect to both psychological and health well-being. People who are experienced in high level of stress are often senseless in emotional awareness, which they then project the stress towards people who they interact with, further aggravating their mental stability such as depression, memory loss and self-isolation. Other than the mental effect, chronic stress is one of the perpetrators to physical health problems such as body pain, increased high blood pressure, and weaker immune system that can eventually lead to serious life-threatening illness such as heart attack, cancer and kidney failure.
Fortunately, stress is not a terminal illness. It is in fact a beneficial bodily response if people are able to manage it. In order to overcome the psychological issue caused by stress, self-awareness in re-positioning concept of stress needs to be established. When one starts to recognize stress as a body signal to reach out, to open up and seek for assistance, a break from emotional isolation can thus eliminates the initial effect of psychological issues. It is also crucial to pursue a healthy life style with adequate among of physical exercise and balance between work and relaxation in order to strengthen stress tolerance. Physical activity such as yoga, hiking, playing sport or meditation allows the body to release endorphins which could interact with the  receptors and trigger a positive feeling in the body, reducing physical discomfort, body tension and pain caused by stress.
In conclusion, chronic stress can be life threatening issue affecting both mental and physical heath. However the negative impact brought by stress can be minimized by understanding stress as the alert to engage with others, seek a helping hand and establish a balance healthy life style.
