Everyone should become vegetarian because they do not need to eat meat to have a healthy diet. Do agree or disagree?
There is a heated controversy surrounding whether people should switch their food preferences, from eating conventional foods to consuming a vegetarian diet. While vegans deny the necessity of eating meat to stay healthy, I believe that animal foods should not be removed completely from human’s menu.
On the one hand, a vegetarian food list, which normally includes a wide variety of vegetables, grains, nuts and dairy products, is beneficial to human’s overall health. Particularly, these non-meat-based meals contain a significantly low level of fat, sugar and salt, which are mainly responsible for deadly health problems such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity. Furthermore, costs and impacts on environment of producing meat-based meals are much more considerable than those of growing plants for foods. In fact, research has shown that generating one pound of animal protein takes over ten times as much land, water and fossil fuel as obtaining a pound of protein from soy bean.
On the other hand, omitting animal foods from the conventional menu is insufficient of various essential nutritious elements. Animal proteins and creatine, to name a few, play a critical role in reinforcement of muscle mass, bone’s health and brain functions. Another reason worth mentioning is that eating a vegetarian diet does not provide ordinary people with adequate energy for a whole working day. In this regard, children, who require a wide diversity of nutrition for full development, and biggest calorie consumers such as sports athletes, are definitely not appropriate customers of these products. As a result, it is unlikely that non-meat products become a total substitute of their counterparts.
In conclusion, while eating on a vegetarian basis positively contributes to saving the environment, it is surely inapplicable to everyone due to nutritious deficiency.
