Q: Some people think that governments must insist on preserving traditional appearance of old buildings undergoing renovation or redevelopment. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the statement?

A:

Preserving traditional looks on old buildings are not an easy task to do. The job itself requires a lot of of funds from the government. I agree with the statement that it is a must for the government to retain traditional appearances on the old buildings. This situation can help for a country to preserve their cultures and histories and also boost the tourism of a country.

Old buildings do carry with them the histories and cultures of the past. Preserving old buildings means that the government will be connecting the present time to the past. It also means that the cultures and histories will not be easily forgotten by its people. For example, in Malacca, Malaysia, which is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage site back in the 2008, historical building like A’Famosa that is till preserved by the government. It allows people to understand the histories of Malacca back in the year of 1500. It is also good for the old buildings that its histories do no go extinct.

Other than that, old building that is preserved by the government can help boost the tourism of a country. The places with old buildings like in Georgetown and Ipoh, Malaysia, tend to have a lot of tourists. Mainly because the old buildings of these places show the cultures of the people back in the past centuries. For example, old buildings in Malacca which has been modernized but are still kept its own traditional appearances has helped to increase the numbers of tourist that comes there. In addition to that, old looking streets in Georgetown, Malaysia also has attracted a lot photographers form all around the world to capture its historical beauty.

In conclusion, preserving traditional appearances on old buildings can help to preserve the cultures and histories of a place and boost the tourism of a country. However, this does not mean that modernization should be put into halt because in my opinion, historical buildings can be modernized but its traditional appearances must be preserved.
